    1. Still subversive in that no figure of authority is allowed to show a redeeming quality. The addition of an unlikely love interest is both hard to believe and poorly written - it's hard to say definitively, but based on my limited samples, Mills does not write women well. Most interesting was the focus on the air war and the attention to historic detail - today's uniformed audiences look at giant propeller planes and city-shielding air-nets as imaginative steam-punk fancies, not accurate descript [...]

    2. As the name suggests, this book has a flying element, involving Charley's younger brother Wilf. There's also a story focussing on Charley's cousin Jack at sea. I liked them: I think it's a good way to see other aspects of the war without putting the lead character into implausible situations.Charley's romance seems quite rushed, but I'm willing to believe that it's quite plausible as an effect of the war.Like earlier books, this includes a commentary at the back. However, this one is much shorte [...]

    3. This is the second to last installment of Charley's War, and it is one of the best. This book focuses on the early part of 1918, and includes segments on the war in the air and the war at sea. In addition to a great story, and incredible artwork, one of the aspects that I like most about this series are the notes that Pat Mills adds, providing the historical aspect to the events that are unfolding. This is one of the best, in a highly recommended series.

    4. Another fabulous instalment in the series, although I believe there's only one more to come. This focusses not only on Charley's adventures, but also those of his brother Wilf and cousin Jack. It also brings back old adversaries from earlier in the series and the art is just stunning, especially the cavalry horses.

    5. Continuing the excellence of Charley's War, with divergences to the air and sea - quite, quite brilliant at telling the bravery - and some of the badness - of Britain's history
