    1. Before I reading the first page I had the clear idea what Pillai going to deal with, and the nature of characters, society and whole, after I reaching the fifty pages i realised that I getting the same experience of Vellappokkathil (which was the only one story I read before From Pillai) . Pillai's extremely enthusiastic narrative caliber told the story of Chudala Muthu, Ishaka Muthu, Palani. Their struggles, poverty, neglects of the society. All he brilliantly created, but when the novel turns [...]

    2. Another necessary book, an insight into the scavenger community, and the feelings of being forever tainted and smelling permanently of the refuse they clear. Some have accused the writer of narrating the story from a place of privilege, but I found it eye-opening that we once treated (and continue to treat) fellow human beings with such contempt and disregard for their dignity. As one reads more on the subject by writers from within the community, I suppose we will correct this book's biases in [...]

    3. According to my father, Thakazhy writes history, and one must approach his work with reference to the socioeconomic structure prevailed during that time period. But even with this at my disposal, I found the novel extremely depressing to digest.I can’t help but notice the romantic sentiment, the so called upper class associate with the oppressed, whose life they are often too convinced to have fully understood, and morally obliged to portray; but in the process of establishing so, end up givin [...]

    8. Everyone acclaims the work as a brilliant narrative which foregrounds the plight of the downtrodden in the feudal past. I would say it is rather a narration of an upper-class educated Indian's concept of what a downtrodden is and how they think. It lacks something, maybe commitment. Just see how the narrative ends, the author didn't let the central hero to come out with a total revolution against the bourgeoisie class because it is his own class, the author's. The central character may be a down [...]

    9. This is an exceptional book on the importance of organizing, the class warfare and the perennial disadvantage with which people of the lowest classes live. To me it was very interesting to know that 'tOTTi'-s were brought in to Kerala from Tamil Nadu in the early part of the 20th century. This is an easy to read book that leaves you with a peculiar mix of hope and desperation. I highly recommend this book. Sundara Ramasamy's preface is equally enchanting as the story itself.

    10. Exceptionally good writing. Described his life & situation in his mind-voice & Explored feelings to improve in his life very clearly. Narrative is like happening in front of us. Must read book for all tamil book lovers

    11. The moral story is simple and crude. It analyses the system/individual relationship, how the former affects the later to preserve the status quo.

    12. Felt the tale was etched from surface. Than bringing in a real imprint the tale I felt wavered through a passive tone, trying to sound genuine.

    13. Brilliant portrayal of the lives of the oppressed and the working class in Alappuzha district of Kerala, India, their struggles, and their helplessness. A great novel by Thakazhi.
