    1. "Bridge of the Single Hair" is a beautifully written page-turner that transports the reader back to 1961, into the midst of the heroic efforts of otherwise average people to bring an end to the inhumanity of segregation practiced in widespread areas in our own country. The reader is absorbed into the young character Jeri as she leaves home and family in LA to travel with the Freedom Rides through the South, witnesses the cruelty of segregation, and suffers the fate of those willing to try to cha [...]

    2. This was an excellent, wonderfully accessible introduction to literature about the Civil Rights Movement in the United States of the 60s and 70s. The author is still very dedicated to civil rights issues. I have interviewed her for an article and will add a link when finished. Though ostensibly fiction, much of the story is a conflation of civil rights events in which Ms. Pugh took part. Ms. Pugh, 18 at the time, took part in the Freedom Rides in 1961 and was herself imprisoned in Parchman Priso [...]

    3. Loved this bookGreat characters on an adventure to be freedom riders and the events that involve fear, sadness, laughter and courage. Read this book in interest day -

    4. Kirkus Review names Bridge of the Single Hair among "Best of 2011"kirkusreviews/best-of/In Pugh’s debut novel, a young woman from California joins the Freedom Riders in 1961, gets arrested and jailed in Mississippi, and learns that not everyone appreciates a hero.Jeri Turner is a 17-year-old spitfire who lives with her cantankerous grandmother in Los Angeles in the early ’60s. As the Civil Rights movement sweeps the country, Jeri volunteers with the Congress of Racial Equality to fight segre [...]

    5. This book was nothing like my usual first choice. I really liked the story though. I have talked about it to so many people since I first opened it, that I have a list of people wanting to borrow my book. The author did a nice job of capturing the emotionalism of the the early sixties in the south. I grew up in Massachussetts, and have lived in North Carolina for seventeen years now. I wasn't born until eleven years after the story took place. This book was the first exposure I have had to what [...]

    6. Candida Pugh spoke recently at a wonderful women's organization (The Women's Exchange) located in the north suburbs of Chicago. I didn't have the chance to hear her talk, but a friend attended and shared her copy of Pugh's novel with me. Fascinating story. I'm younger than Pugh, but I've always thought I knew a good deal about the Freedom Rides of the early 60's . Well, from reading this I quickly learned that my insight was limited, but this 'fictionalized memoir' is filling in many of my gapsT [...]

    7. Bridge of the Single Hair is about a young woman's journey during the Freedom Rides and her subsequent incarceration for civil disobedience. She meets a young black man during her term in the Mississippi state penitentiary. She tries to help him, endangering her life and the lives of others. The historical accuracy of Bridge of the Single Hair is impressive, and helps create a poignant and thought-provoking story about race and justice in the 1960s Deep South. The prose is simple, engaging, and [...]

    8. Bridge of the Single Hair is a wonderful book. It is told in the time of people fighting for segregation. One girl is different from the rest. Jeri Turner fights harder than the others and ends up in a Mississippi State Prison. There she friends a male inmate thru a vent. When released she tries to save him and finally has to choise beyween herself or him.The author done a great job describing the conditions and places in that time. You feel like your right there with the characters. I got sucke [...]

    9. I won this book in a giveaway! Thank you for allowing me to read this book. I really like historical fiction, and this one grabbed me right away by the realism and fullness of the main character. I really enjoyed the way this book was written, and it kep my attention to the very last page. I would definately reccomend this book to anyone who is interrested in the Civil Rights Era of the US.

    10. A fresh look at history from one who was thereThis book explores an ugly time in our recent history-the civil rights movement, and the Freedom Riders in Mississippi. The language is raw and made me very uncomfortable remembering that era. The narrative is told from the perspective of a 17 year old idealist girl. I realized we don't always do the right things for the "right" reasons, but it is important to continue to do them anyway.

    11. Excellent, both in the history of the civil rights movement of the early 1960's and in the clear-eyed account of what it's like to be idealistic, passionate, bright, courageous, and very young. A coming of age in wartime novel, from a girl's point of view. I would recommended it to people who remember, and people who don't remember, the struggle for civil rights; people who are now, or have ever been, young.

    12. There was something about these characters that was familiar and early in the story I liked them. The story is unimaginable and draws the reader in. This book is chilling in many ways but also inspiring.

    13. This was a Giveaway book that I won. Basically about the 1960's when segragation existed and a white woman goes out of her way to rescue a Black man in prison but noone was explaining what this man did and she did not want to give up to rescue him out of jail. Very enjoyable read.

    14. I won this book in a Giveaway! This is not the type of book I usually read but I still found it interesting when I was looking at it! This was a great story that I really enjoyed!
