    About "Honoré de Balzac"

      • Honoré de Balzac

Honor de Balzac was a nineteenth century French novelist and playwright His magnum opus was a sequence of almost 100 novels and plays collectively entitled La Com die humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the fall of Napol on Bonaparte in 1815.Due to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature He is renowned for his multi faceted characters even his lesser characters are complex, morally ambiguous and fully human Inanimate objects are imbued with character as well the city of Paris, a backdrop for much of his writing, takes on many human qualities His writing influenced many famous authors, including the novelists Marcel Proust, mile Zola, Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Henry James and Jack Kerouac, as well as important philosophers such as Friedrich Engels Many of Balzac s works have been made into films, and they continue to inspire other writers. An enthusiastic reader and independent thinker as a child, Balzac had trouble adapting himself to the teaching style of his grammar school His willful nature caused trouble throughout his life, and frustrated his ambitions to succeed in the world of business When he finished school, Balzac was apprenticed as a legal clerk, but he turned his back on law after wearying of its inhumanity and banal routine Before and during his career as a writer, he attempted to be a publisher, printer, businessman, critic, and politician He failed in all of these efforts La Com die Humaine reflects his real life difficulties, and includes scenes from his own experience.Balzac suffered from health problems throughout his life, possibly due to his intense writing schedule His relationship with his family was often strained by financial and personal drama, and he lost than one friend over critical reviews In 1850, he married Ewelina Ha ska, his longtime paramour he died five months later.

After the Chouans and the Physiologie du marriage,La paix du menage is the oldest [...]

    4. Set a bit earlier than the other Balzac novellas I have read so far, in the design of the Comédie humaine this is concerned with painting the moeurs of the Napoleonic upper classes. As far as the plot, set at a ball, it seemed like a YA novel taking place at a high school dance, with all the stereotypes of the "popular girl", "mean girl", "new girl", "jocks trying to score" and so forth; rather disconcerting when the characters are supposed to be in their mid-twenties or older and the "jocks" a [...]

Ach so.

    7. Balzac short story where two seasoned courtiers in the time of Napoleon's reign compete over the affections of a rich Countess and a beautiful stranger at a ball, but discover that they are not the only ones with an agenda.Martial de La Roche-Hugon is a powerful lawyer whose vanity brings him to an amorous crossroads where he 'hesitated between a fortune within his grasp and the indulgence of his caprice.' Comte de Montcornet is his friend and rival for the hand (and money) of Madame de Vaudremo [...]

Fique [...]

    9. This is a scene set in Napoleon I time in a court of ballroom where two guys Martial and Comte de Montcornet are looking to engage into a romantic happening with Madade de Vaudremont and they find they are not the only ones, being that she has a tremendous fortune. Another girl appear who shades Madame de Baudremont. The story is very short and a nice but not very satisfying glimpse into Balzac's world. The important thing to say is the it is mentioned a "historian of morals" regarding one of th [...]

    10. This whole story seemed to be a storm in a tea-cup. A mysterious lady in blue is at a ball; the chaps are all fascinated. Martial bets that he can get this ice-maiden to dance with him and he does. And when he does, Madame de Soulanges takes his ring - because it's hers. Her husband had given it to his lady-friend, who in turn had given it to Martial. There's a show-down when she goes home and hubby notices the ring. The characters are whirling around like the dancers at the ball and not to much [...]

    11. One of Balzac's slighter short stories, the tale of a woman whose ring has been given to another woman by her feckless husband, and how she recovers it. All the action takes place at a ball at the height of the splendour of Napoleon's Paris, with the fashionable elite shown as shallow and immoral. A pleasant enough read, but not more than that.

    12. Domestic Peace (La Paix du Menage) centers on a ring, taken by a man from his wife in order that he may present it as a gift to another woman. This woman in turn presents it to a different man. When the wife sees the man wearing it at a ball, she determines to recover it.

    13. The edition I have is a 1958 Penguin Classics Middlesex (with a translation by Marion Ayton Crawford edited by E. V. Rieu.).This includes some short stories I cannot so far find published anywhere else alone: ie. "Before Jena"(An Episode from A Mysterious Affair), and The Abbe Birotteau.

    14. Contains some of Balzac's earlier and (in my opinion anyway) lesser short stories, but is worth a read for the classics 'Abbe Birotteau' and 'Colonel Chabert'.
