    1. First book I've read by Lian Hearn, and it was a long one. I am not familiar with Japanese history, so I came to this only knowing that the author had done a lot of research for the period in which her story occurs: a period with a stratified society of warriors, farmers, merchants, and others. The warriors are held above all others in this society, and have a variety of codes they live by. This is a prequel for Hearn's "Tales of the Otori" series, with the main character being Shigeru. We follo [...]

    2. I recommend this to be the first book read in the series (it is written last, but as a prequel to the other four). The story is beautiful, describing ancient Japan with its beautiful houses and gardens, samurais and their conduct codes, ninjas, Christians' persecutions; it has sword fights, love, treachery, friendship and very well developed characters, that you'll grow to like and take interest in their fate. “The best way is to be strong enough to make your enemy think twice about attacking y [...]

    3. Absolutely awesome start/end of the best series of books i've ever read. there is no higher praise. Feudal japanese set tales of samurai, geisha, swords, blood, treachery, intrigue, and love. The complex, entertaining and beautiful history of the otori is finally finished with Heaven's Net is Wide - the last in the series and a prequel to the other books. This book is in third person like the recent and equally awesome Harsh Cry of the Heron, and unlike the original trilogy told from Otori Takeo [...]

    4. Okay, so I don't often do reviews of the books I read, but this is going to be an exception. This is the prequel of the series "The Tales of the Otori", and being a Japanophile I absolutely fell in love with this book. I anxiously await reading the rest of the series, but they are surprisingly hard to find (not at the local bookstores or in the Barnes & Noble at the Grove). The detail to which the author immerses you into the Japanese culture is astounding, and it wove in just enough fantasy [...]

    8. This is so sad, and very disapointing.I have loved this entire series, even more by the fact that I feel like I happened upon it myself years ago and how it seems to have a small audience. You know how it is when you have a favorite book or movie thatyou don't think anyone else knows about about but you, and that it seems made for you? That was how it was for me and the Tales of the Otori series. This book, technically the fifth in the series but written as the "first", is presumably the last bo [...]

    9. Publisher's SummaryAs Tolkien's The Silmarillion is to The Lord of the Rings, Liam Hearn's Heaven's Net Is Wide is to Tales of the Otori. This is the back story fans have been yearning for.Set before the Tales begin, Heaven's Net recounts the life of Lord Otori Shigeru, the series' spiritual warrior-godfather and the adoptive father of the Tales' Takeo. We learn about Shigeru's training in the ways of the warrior and feudal lord; his relationship with the Tribe of mysteriously powerful assassins [...]

    10. It had been a long time since I had read Harsh Cry of the Heron and I couldn't really remember the characters or the plot very well, however as this was a prequel, I really had no excuses to not read it. Lian Hearn did a brilliant job with this book and it is definitely my favourite Tales of the Otori book, even though it is not part of the original series. I would absolutely love it if there was a sequel to this from the perspective of Shigeru but that is clearly not possible. After reading thi [...]

    11. Saya suka kisah2 Jepang masa lalu.Saya suka Kisah Klan Otori.Saya suka Otori Shigeru sejak saya membaca Across the Nightingale Floor. Titik.

    12. i can't decide if it would be better to read this as the first book in the series or the last cos i want to read Across the Nightingale Floor all over again! I'm officially putting this series on my list of favorites 😍😍😍

    13. #2010-6# hadiah dari luluKembali ke titik awal. Kembali ke awal pertempuran. Kisah Klan Otori jilid 0.

    14. I loved all of the books in The Tale of the Otori. I read Across the Nightingale Floor first by accident. At least I didn't know it was part of a series and was fascinated with the story. Got the downloads from Audible for the entire series and was immersed in the Tale for days. They brought to life the beauty, subtlety, intrigue and brutality of Japanese culture in that era. It's something that needs to be given full reign over the imagination to appreciate and get a glimmer of understanding of [...]

    15. There is a feeling that comes when one finds a new book by a favorite author that is indescribable. When I saw that there was a prequel to the Tales of the Otori, I simply felt truly joyous. There has never been a tremendous amount of writing about the "Far East" -- but Hearn's tales of the Otori are in a class by themselves.Lian Hearn writes of what is basically a fantastic version of an unspecified period of time in Japanese history that, honestly, not a lot of people are familiar with, other [...]

    16. Took me almost 6 weeks to finish this.Once you've read a trilogy and its final part in the 4th book, it's very hard, at least for me to have to read the 5th book as the 'prequel'.Seeing as I already knew how it's going to play out, the motivation wasn't really there to dip into this story as often as i have done with the previous four books. It was a lovely insight into Shigeru's upbringing and past, which led him to begin his quest in 'Across the Nightingale Floor' (Book 1)However if I had a cho [...]

    17. I bought this in London for Alex to read (teen literature section)- and ended up reading it myself. The author is a British author who developed a facination with early Japan. Hers is a fictional world of 3 Japanese warrior clans a tribe with valueable skills (hired as spies and assasins) and a hidden group with alternative religious views. I like the story and the writing. At times it seemed a bit slow, but the characters are strong and well developed with beliefs and actions that tie them clos [...]

    18. This book is a redemption in my eyes. It is the prequel but it was written after The Harsh Cry of the Heron which disturbed me. It's been a while since I read the last book in this series, but I distinctly remember thinking this is over the top. I don't care about Takeru's daughters. I should probably give it another read, but I'm here to say that whatever the reason for the bad taste left in my mouth after Harsh Cry, all is as it should be now. I'm going to pretend that last book didn't happen. [...]

    19. This might be the worst book I have ever readd that is really saying something. If your going to write a book about ancient samurais, magical assassins, and kingdoms at war maybe just maybe make the climatic book altering battle scene longer than 1 page. The rest of the time is spent reading robotic, sappy, and repetitive dialogue between characters you quickly lose track of since everyone acts exactly the same. And in the end its really a thinly disguised book about Christianity and how much be [...]

    20. This book was recommended by a dear friend of mine. And I totally fell in love with it. I love that it spans a family dynasty and many years. the writing and description of Japan is breath taking. Makes you feel like you are there with the characters. Can't wait to read the next books in the series!

    21. This was just too hard to stay connected to the characters in audio, and I gave up. That was sad, because I really liked the voice used by the author in telling the story. It is unreasonable to hope that I'd get to this before all the other things that didn't work in audio, but that I suspect might be good, but it qualifies as a candidate for that.

    22. As other reviewers have mentionned, I'm really glad I read this after Harsh cry of the heron, which was a very disapointing conclusion to a fantastic series. Heaven's net is wide is the prequel to the series and I enjoyed very much. It is the perfect beginning/end for the wonderful Tales of the Otori.

    23. The new beginning-and the grand finale-to the beloved Tales of the Otori series.Very good. Set in Eastern feudal island resembling Japan, with brutal warlords, a little magic, romance and lost love. Beautiful and tragic.

    26. Otori Shigeru was my favorite character when I read Tales of the Otori, and so I was excited to read a book that focused on him. (As a side note, I feel like this must be read only after the 3 main books, seeing as it somehow spoils some things and others are only interesting or satisfying to read about because of what happens next.)However, I did not much enjoy the first half of this book - probably because at this point Shigeru isn't yet the character I love but a boy who wants to have sex wit [...]

    27. This book is a 560 page (14 CD) prequel to a 305 page(8 CD) book that fails to tell a complete story. So, in short, it is an introduction to a story that is twice as long as the story itself. It is very well written but should only be read if you are so enamored of the actual story so much that you want 560 pages of set up. Personally I despise books that lack any kind of resolution, which this one does. It doesn’t even pretend to be anything other than a 560 page introduction by providing som [...]
