    1. This was a heartbreak tale of growing up poor in rugged seacoast Maine. The details were so evocative and drew me into the moments and memories. This book is similar to Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes, and though the writing is better in McCourt's book, Thomas Hanna does a fine job. I found this book deeply affecting, captivating, and charming, even as it was heartbreaking so see a family struggle with poverty, with little compassion from their neighbors.

    2. Book club: Physical book// I have had this book on my shelf forever. I am a Mainer and wanted to learn more about my lovely state. Although this book dragged at times I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

    3. The introduction set the reading of this book off to a dismal start as it begins with an old man's rambling description of the town in which he grew up and the many changes since. He spends time describing what used to be where as if you're taking a walk with him through town. I'm glad I patiently slogged through that because the rest of the book is an interesting, and at times touching read. I'm impressed with how the author attempted to keep his perspective authentic to how he must have felt a [...]

    4. After reading several books about the hardship of life and survival in third world countries, I found it very interesting to read about life and survival during the Great Depression right here in Maine. Very good read.

    5. Interesting true story of a very poor boy growing up on the Maine coast in the 30's and 40's. A reminder of how good we have it these days. Enjoyed reading about an area we know well.

    6. An interesting read, especially if you're from the area. A reminder of how tough things were "back in the olden days."

    7. What an awesome book! It was about a little boy growning up very poor and living in horrible conditions. It was very heartwarming to read.

    8. This memoir pulls you into the not-so-distant past and shows you what it was like to live in poverty in a rural Maine fishing village. He tells it like it was without embellishing -- enough detail at the beginning to set the scene, and then a series of stories with brief asides that add just enough context to frame them. I particularly appreciated the pictures, and the title is perfect for the book. Mr. Hanna shows us his life as though he is letting us look at things he's saved in a cigar box: [...]
