    2. This is the book to have when planning your hikes around New Zealand! It is the easiest way to find out about hikes in an area without having to go to the local DOC (Department of Conservation) office. It gives information on the hike itself, procedures for booking Great Walks, transportation to and from the hike, and places to sleep and eat. Local DOC offices will have additional information on hikes, however, if you are already in the area, and it's important to find out if the huts you want t [...]

    3. I bought this guide as I am planning to do some tramping in New Zealand soon. This book has good summaries and overviews that make it easy to find a tramp that suits your needs. It also includes detailed descriptions of the routes and daily itineraries for each of the tramps. The maps provide a good overview of terrain and features too. This is one of the better books I've found to help plan a trip; of course, once you select a route to hike, you will probably want a more detailed map and/or [...]

    4. A friend and I used this book when planning a backpacking trip from the U.S. Unfortunately, we only had enough time in NZ to sample one of the hikes detailed in this book. The 60 mile hike we chose was very accurately described and we found the info in the book to be useful in helping us make a decision about where to go in the first place. Well worth the purchase.

    5. It is great to have a book that focuses on New Zealand hiking. We are planning a trip that will be primarily hiking.

    6. I bought this book about a year ago and I'm not going to NZ until 2010, but I just wanted to get to know the tramps and the areas around them. Once Again, lonely planet delivers a 5* guide. This is an absolute must if you travel to NZ for the sake of tramping.
